Band Of the Week – Oceansize

May 18th, 2010 by Kieran

I first heard of oceansize when i was forunate enough to catch them live supporting fightstar, as they started up i was very much not in the mood for anything but fightstar i will admit, but i warmed to them like butter on toast. There is something beautiful running through the veins of the 5 piece Manchester based band. I felt honestly refreshed after having caught them and i fell deep in love with their melodic and deeply delayed guitars.

Named after the track ‘ocean size’ by Jane’s nothing and producing tracks reaching on average 8 mins oceansize won’t be topping the charts anytime soon, but the underground following these boys receive is immense, and they are truly worthy of it. Songs lull you into a beautiful choral sleep and make you raise your hands as the beautiful deadly distortion occasionally breaks through creating head nodding atmosphere that still promotes a calm and quiet serenity.

Steve Vennart, guitarist and vocalist remarked that during the recording of Everyone Into Position in 2005 at the works recording studio he had ran into world famous rapper Snoop Dogg and recorded guitar parts for the rapper’s demos. After a phone call from Polydoor records elaborated Vennart. requesting use of the studio, the mystery client turned out to be Snooppy D- oh double gizzle. “This studio is where we have done a lot of our work but it isn’t an industry blinged up place, it’s just a nice and comfortable basement studio. We ended up being his skivvies for the night literally making pizza and frying chicken for him. He worked out that I was a guitarist and sent me driving at five o’ clock in the morning to fetch my guitar because I’m left handed. I ended up playing all these cheesy porn soundtrack guitar riffs to him for about three hours until I couldn’t play it anymore. He likes everything really loose, definitely not tight. His grooves are unorthodox. I’ll be honest; I didn’t appreciate his music until I saw how they do it all. After every gig he does he has somewhere booked out so he can just turn up with about fifteen guys who all have a macintosh and just make beats all night. It was really great watching them work”
The boys are currently working on another album and i for one can’t wait to hear it. Apart from some great support slots and having their music featured on t.v shows such as The O.C The oceansize lads haven’t really had the widespread recognition they seriously deserve. Let’s hope 2010 brings a whole new series of success. I will leave you with an incredibly beautiful track entitled Ornament/ the last wrongs

Help Send You And What Army To Download Festival

April 15th, 2010 by Kieran

Hello there, this post is actually somewhat of a request i must confess. My band have reached the final stage of a competition in which if we get through (8 out of the remaining 16 do) we get to play download festival, T in the park and so on. Now it is safe to say that paying these festivals would be a dream come true so i knocked up a little video compilation of us playing live and finished it off with a link to vote for us. The voting requires no registration so if you have a free second it would be incredible. Thank you very much = D

Band Of The Week – Periphery

April 13th, 2010 by Kieran

There are many peple out there at the moment latching onto the incredible sound of Periphery, maybe it’s because of the disgustingly heavy guitar lines, perhaps the polyrhythmic dischordant sound, or even the incredibly structured harmonies. Yes all of these things would attract anyone with ears but the reason I am so fond of Periphery currently is because they show you every stage of the production process.

Periphery have been releasing their current album as demo versions, instrumental versions, versions with old singers and beter produced versions. As a result of hearing each and every song evolve from nothing into a masterpiece i feel a deep connection with the band. I do feel like a member of periphery, and God help me, i wish i was. Periphery have just been announced as road runner’s latest recruitment and they dearly deserve it. I present to you the completed version of an incredible song called light. Enjoy

Axe Fx The ultimate guitar recording equipment

January 12th, 2010 by Kieran

My friend Dave over at Boy in a band .com has made the sound investment of the axe fx an incredible tool for recording a variety of guitar tones and has enlisted me to do some tone testing. Naturally i jumped at the chance, although it was 8 am in the morning so i more slumped into the chance but really enjoyed using it. Over the next few days we will be demonstrating some of the effects it offers. Here today we are demonstrating the driven distorted sounds it offers on presets.

Hope you enjoy and i will see you again tomorrow
